The Merate headquarters of the Brera Astronomical Observatory opens its doors to the public to show the frontiers of scientific and technological innovation in the astronomical field. Our researchers will accompany you through the laboratories of Merate, to discover the modern research that is carried out in our Institute. We will also make a short visit to our telescopes.

Guided evening observations

The Ruths telescope

For information call: 0272320459 from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m..
Bad weather sky observation will be replaced by a lecture and by a dome and telescope visit.
Warning: use your mobile phone as a torch to illuminate the path in the park to access the domes - wear comfortable shoes (better no heel shoes) and pay attention to the way by foot - the domes of the telescopes are not heated in winter and / or air-conditioned in summer (use mosquito repellent): please, choose carefully your clothing, especially during autumn and winter.
To access the Observatory it is strongly recommended to wear the FFP2 or surgical mask and keep the distance for the entire time of the visit.
In consideration of the epidemiological trend of COVID, the activity may be canceled or vary in its modalities depending on the situation at the time of the initiative.

Apart from the sky!

The Zeiss Telescope

The Zeiss telescope
(1926; diameter = 100 cm)
It was given by Germany to Italy as part of “compensation for war damages” and, at that time, it was the second largest telescope in Europe.

The Ruths telescope

The Ruths telescope
(1968; diameter = 134 cm)
It was entirely made in Italy and it was the first specimen in the world in which the aluminium was used to made the primary mirror. This is the telescope that is usually used to watch the sky during the evening visits.

The park of Merate

The park
The domes and offices are surrounded by a great variety of trees and bushes among which a 200 years old cedar of libanon that was damaged by a tornado in 1999, cantenarian camellias, pines, firs, laurels, horse-chestnuts and other more.
