Second announcement

Workshop on "The first year of science with X-shooter", Como (Italy), October 19-22, 2010

SOC: S. Covino (Co-Chair), S. D'Odorico, J. Fynbo, P. Groot, F. Hammer, J. Hjorth, L. Kaper, S. Randich (Co-Chair), P. Rasmussen, F. Zerbi

Rationale
Thanks to its superb capabilities in terms of wavelength coverage, spectral resolution and sensitivity, X-shooter on the VLT opened new exciting perspectives in different areas, including the formation of stars and brown dwarfs, stellar populations in the Milky Way and in galaxies of the Local Group, nearby and distant galaxies, Supernovae, and still enigmatic Gamma Ray Bursts.

The first observations with X-shooter in its full configuration were carried out in March 2009. Regular scientific operations started in September 2009 and are since then successfully continuing. The very large number of proposals requesting X-shooter in ESO P84, P85, P86 indeed indicates the need of the astronomical community for an instrument of this type.

The workshop will bring together specialists with expertise in different scientific areas, who will highlight key results from the first year of observations with X-shooter. The workshop is also intended to be a forum to discuss and share common experience in the reduction and analysis of X-shooter spectra.

The workshop will be dedicated to the memory of Roberto Pallavicini, one of the most active promoters of X-shooter from the very beginning and a prominent figure of the Italian and international astronomical community.

Workshop format
The format of the workshop would allow for invited reviews, invited talks and contributed talks in approximately equal number. In addition, there will be very short contributions, instead of the more standard poster session. Conference proceedings will be published in the "Astronomische Nachrichten". Total attendance will be limited to about 80 participants.

The workshop will be split in six sessions covering the following scientific topics:

  • Instrument description and performances
  • The formation of stars and brown dwarfs
  • Stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies
  • Supernovae
  • Gamma Ray Bursts
  • Physics of galaxies and IGM in the low- and high-z Universe.

Post-docs and PhD students who have already obtained results of scientific relevance from their X-shooter data are encouraged to apply. A small number of traveling grants is available to those who do not have other source of supports.

Registration
Registration fee is 200 € before September 1st 2010 and 250 € afterwards.
The registration fee covers the cost of the meeting room, morning and afternoon coffee/breaks and the opening reception.
Registration cancellations carried out before October 15 2010 will be totally refunded.
Social dinner payment (about 50 €/person) will be delivered during registration in Como.

Abstract
Abstracts should be submitted through the website by August 15.
Accepted participants and speakers will be notified by August 31.
The workshop web site is open at http://www.brera.inaf.it/xshooter2010/ where all the relevant information will be posted, along with the registration form.

Accomodation
The conference will be held at the Palace Hotel and Centro Congressi in Como, just 2 minutes walk from the harbor and the train station.
For hotel booking, you can easily find many accommodations in the Como city-centre.
