In the last few years, we have developed and tested a novel type of organic coatings that, when deposited over conventional coatings, enhance the soft X-ray reflectivity of grazing-incidence optics. These coatings are distinctive for their composition—based on the neurotransmitter dopamine—and their unique deposition method. They can be applied to single mirrors or pre-assembled optics simply by immersing the components in a liquid precursor, offering significantly lower complexity and cost compared to conventional techniques. We have explored the potential applications of these innovative coatings for future telescopes, such as ATHENA and eXTP, and have assessed their performance on both samples and prototypes. We will present the current status of the technology and discuss the results of recent tests aimed at verifying the suitability of these coatings for use in future space missions. |
