The new 23m diameter LST-North Cherenkov telescope array is currently under construction on the Canary Island of La Palma at the observatory at the Roque de los Muchachos, 2400 m asl. This presentation will explain the motivation behind the design of the current LST telescopes starting with a rough introduction of the physics of gamma ray air showers leading to the design of the very successful and still operating MAGIC telescopes. The next-generation LST telescope is not just only an enlarged MAGIC telescope but it has been significantly improved in many points compared to the old MAGIC telescopes. As the MAGIC telescopes still had a somewhat experimental character, the LST telescopes are very professionally designed and constructed such that they can work over a very long time span of about 30 years, as well as on the Southern hemisphere, home of powerful earthquakes. Finally a short overview of physics will demonstrate what can and will be done with the highly sensitive LST Array.
