The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will be the largest optical/NIR telescope on Earth. I will give an overview of the ELT project and its current status, describe the main features of the ELT instruments, discuss its science capabilities, and conclude by highlighting the very important role played by Italy within the ELT project.
