The binary neutron star merger GW170817 was the first gravitational wave event with electromagnetic counterparts, of which a gamma-ray burst. This event marked the beginning of gravitational astronomy and ushered in new ideas and fresh perspectives of study for gamma-ray bursts. From the geometry of relativistic jets and emission mechanisms therein to populations of sources and their use for precision cosmology, I will present some of these recent developments and illustrate them with work of my own and collaborators. I will also discuss how near-future advances in gamma-ray burst observations and multi-messenger data collecting will support this new era of gamma-ray burst studies.
