The gravitational and hydro-dynamical interaction between galaxies and their environment plays a major role in driving galaxy evolution. Both statistical studies of large galaxy samples and detailed analysis of individual systems are important to fully understand which processes dominate in different regions of the cosmic web, and on what timescales they operate. I will present our current understanding of galaxy evolution in the nearby Fornax cluster based on multiwavelength observations. In particular, I will focus on recent observations of neutral hydrogen gas at radio frequencies and present first results obtained using the South African SKA precursor MeerKAT. I will also give a brief status update on the Square Kilometre Array and an overview of the current, major HI surveys that are being carried out with the SKA pathfinders.
