Starting from the analogy between the classical instability of the hydrogen atom and the singularity theorems of general relativity, we conjecture that understanding black holes could be the key to developing a quantum theory of the gravitational interaction. Some results obtained from an approach termed Horizon Quantum Mechanics are then briefly presented, which point to black holes as extended quantum objects, like in the so called corpuscular picture.
