After a short introduction on the properties of gravitational waves I will describe the working principles of the interferometers for gravitational waves detection focusing on the various types of noise which limit the apparatus sensitivity. I will then describe of the "upgrades" currently underway for an improvement of the sensitivity by a factor of 10 (Advanced VIRGO, Advanced LIGO) which is a must in order to start with a true gravitational wave astronomy. Finally I will describe the event GW150914, the first direct detection of gravitational waves, generated by the fusion of two blacks holes.
