I will describe some of the reasons why black holes -- particularly the supermassive ones -- are key actors in our modern view of the cosmos. I will then review recent observational and theoretical results which tell us where to find the best places to do energy investments in the universe: jet- producing active galactic nuclei (AGN). Finally, I will outline an emerging model which explains why these black hole engines are so "green".
