I will provide an introduction to the generation of initial conditions for cosmological N-body simulations on large scales. Then I will explain how these can be derived in a General Relativistic setting, and quantify how large the additional terms are that become relevant on extremely large scales. Finally, I will briefly touch on the open issue of the meaning of coordinate gauges in N-body simulations
