I give a summary of the reasons for believing that the energy density of the universe is dominated by a nearly uniform component, and show what we have been able to learn about its empirical properties. I then survey the different possible explanations that exist for this phenomenon: vacuum fluctuations; scalar fields of various kinds; modifications of gravity; the multiverse.
