We review the existing data on the background light over a wide photon energy interval from UV band to the millimeter. To this end, new and recent data from space observatories are fully exploited. This information is also used to estimate the (fast) evolution of the photon background with cosmic time. These data are compared with observations of the spectral energy distributions at TeV energies of nearby and distant BLAZARs. We argue that such a comparison may already effectively constrain truly diffuse background components of primordial origin related with the first generation of stars. Perspectives of a combined use of Fermi and Cherenkov telescopes on ground are finally considered
