Different approaches are widely used to link the physical properties of galaxies and the dark matter halos in which they reside. Semi-analytic models represent one possible approach. I will review methods, aims, and limits of these models. I will then discuss recent results obtained by coupling semi-analytic techniques to high-resolution N-body simulations. Note the 11h schedule
