The problem of inferring bounds on an unknown physical parameter from a given set of data has been very important in experimental physics since its start. For a long time, physicists have found fulfilling answers in classical statistical methods of "interval estimation" developed in the first half of the 20th century. In the past few years, new problems have emerged in physics practice, leading to paradoxes, debates, new ideas, and a revived interest for fundamental statistical issues.
