The production of additively manufactured fused silica is an emerging technological field. It could offer the astronomical instrumentation community significant advantages relative to the conventional manufacturing techniques especially where mass constraints are tight, such as space-based applications, by allowing for the lightweighting of the mirror structure. The impact on the optical manufacturing of using additively manufactured fused silica is, however, poorly understood. I will describe the development of some lightweighted fused silica mirrors performed at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre and report on the results of the polishing that I have performed on these samples during my time in Merate. |
