Studying the host galaxies of GRBs and other transients has always been a crucial aspect of trying to understand the progenitor system, that we might never be able to actually observe prior to explosion in our lifetimes. We have come a long way from the early days when we assumed long GRB hosts were exclusively blue, star-forming dwarfs with very low metallicity and short GRB hosts evolved galaxies with old stellar populations. The reality is a lot more diverse. Especially resolved observations of the GRB environment have proven to be important in order not to jump to the wrong conclusions. I will give an overview over the state of art of the field, spatially resolved and unresolved hosts, ongoing efforts and what we will need in the future to get a broader, more detailed view of GRB hosts, also at higher redshifts. |
