Percival Lowell was born in Boston on March 13, 1855, the eldest son of
Augustus and Katharine Bigelow Lowell (fig. 12). There was blue blood on
both sides of the family. An ancestor, Percival Lowle, had come to what
later became known as Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1639. A Bristol merchant,
Lowle had followed John Winthrop, the ``Lodestone of America'', to the
Massachusetts Bay Colony at the advanced age of sixty-seven---an undertaking
that attests to the almost manic energy that characterized many of his
descendants as well.
